UCL Automates Production of 500 Course Brochures in Just 4 Weeks With ReportLab
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 17 August 2011
Universities today offer hundreds of courses to a diverse audience, distributing information both online and in printed prospectuses. Concerned by the costs of bulk printing and the inefficiency of manually pasting and re-formatting the same content in several places, many educational institutions are seeking a more rational way to manage and publish content.
UCL has already taken the big step forward of storing their course information in a well-organised database, using it to drive their web site, but with information on over 500 courses, the challenge of synchronising printed publications with the web site manually would be enormous. However, with ReportLab’s solution, UCL can instantly generate high quality PDF fact sheets from the exact same content.
The solution, built and delivered in just four weeks, allows prospective students to take away a professionally designed, up-to-date brochure for every course directly from the web site. In addition, print-ready versions will allow staff to professionally print 4-page booklets for every course on demand.
Ian Bartlett, Head of Publications and Marketing Services at UCL said, “With ReportLab, our publications will become a simple extension of our website, generated automatically from the very same content.”
Behind the scenes, UCL’s data is automatically fed into ReportLab’s content management and brochure production system. When a fact sheet is requested, the appropriate content is assembled in seconds based on standard templates to produce a PDF. These templates match the design and layout of UCL’s course publications and the fact sheets are indistinguishable from manually created documents. The system is even intelligent enough to fill empty space and rearrange the layout to accommodate any variation in the length of the course description.
“This system just goes to show that people should expect the same flexibility, customisability, and ease of management in document production as they have come to expect from web development,” said Andrew Robinson, ReportLab’s managing director.
